Vital Statistics is available to assist you in obtaining a birth, marriage or death certificate for any resident of the province from 1892 to present. If you are looking for an ancestor that lived before 1892 please contact the Provincial Archives.

You may apply in person at any of the following places:

If you apply for the birth certificate in St. John's, there is about a 20 minute waiting period. If you apply in Gander or Corner Brook, you are still able to get the information the same day. If you apply at any of the remaining offices, there is about a three day waiting period.

You may also apply for a birth certificate by sending a signed letter or application.

Be sure to include:

  • Name
  • Date of Birth
  • Place of Birth
  • Name of Birth Parents (including mother’s maiden name)
  • Complete mailing address and telephone number (state your relationship to the person named on the certificate if you are not that person).

Birth Certificates are available in wallet size and long form, framing size.

Wallet size certificates do not contain parent's names.

Please be sure to specify the number and type of certificate you require.

Generally, birth certificates cost $20. Cheques or money orders may be made payable to the Newfoundland Exchequer Account. If you are paying by credit card, Visa and Mastercard are accepted. Please include the card number, expiry date and signature of the cardholder. However, if the birth occurred after March 27, 1991, and was registered within one year from the date of birth, the first certificate is free.

Registration application process:

Forms that you will need for registration can be picked up at:

  • Department of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (address below)
  • First Nations or Aboriginal associations
  • Aboriginal Friendship Centres

If you were born on or after:

  1. Obtain a certified copy of the child’s birth certificate indicating parents’ names. This document can be obtained from the Provinces’ Vital Statistics Division.
     
  2. Write a letter which states that you want to register the child as an Indian. Give the names of the parent with whom the child should be registered (children are registered with only one parent). Both parents must sign the letter.
     
  3. Send the copy of the birth certificate and the letter to your First Nations office or to DIAND (address below).

If you were born before:

  1. Obtain and fill out the following forms:
    • "Application for Registration of an Adult under the Indian Act": for a person who is 18 or older;
    • "Application for Registration of Children under the Indian Act": for a person who is under 18 or for a person who is intellectually impaired.
       
  2. Include as much information as you can about the applicant’s Aboriginal background and the name or location of the First Nation or First Nations to which the applicant’s ancestors belonged. If you know the names of relatives who have been registered, you should include these also.
     
  3. Send the completed form to:
